Chapter Thirteen
I pranced in front of the smeared mirror, trying to steal one last peek at myself before taking the plunge. My off-white dress was skin tight, and fell just below the knee. I decided against a traditional dress, âcause there was nothing traditional about me.
Of course, my hair was styled to perfection, but I had my faithful wire brush in my bag just in case a string moved out of place. My mother had always told me my special day was coming, and that Iâd look great. It was just a shame she couldnât be here to share my happiness with me.
I had thought about calling her last week when Samuel proposed, but decided against it. It was too much for my family to handle, especially my brother. I figured Iâd just show up in Detroit with a big rock on my finger, and theyâd all forget about my past, and tell me how proud they were of me.
A loud bang on the door suddenly reminded me that my husband to be, and my only friend in ATL, were waiting on me on the other side of the bathroom door.
Stacy yelled, âTrust me, Chanel, you look good.â
I grabbed my purse, and smiled into the mirror one last time. I was damn proud of myself. Iâd gone from pillar to post, trying to find a man whoâd marry me and take care of me forever. That day was finally here. If I could high-five myself, I damn sho nuff would.
âHow do I look?â I asked, and did a twist for Stacy in the middle of the dusty tiled floor, as soon as the bathdoor flew open.
Tears instantly welled up in her eyes. âYou look so pretty.â
I couldnât believe my friend was showing some emotion. âGirl, donât get all mushy on me and shit. Youâll make my mascara run.â We both laughed.
When we stepped into the miniature sized living room, Samuel was standing there in a custom made tan suit, looking so damn good, I wanted to just walk up and sneak a good rub on his crotch. He was sexy like that, and always got me moist even from afar. His friend, my savior, Jamaican Lou, stood near the mantle dusting like he really liked keeping his house clean. The place was a dump, and I was still kinda pissed that Samuel would even agree to have us married at his place. He knew how I felt about Lou, but for some reason, kept bringing up the fact that it was Lou whoâd saved my ass from the Essence tragedy. Heâd pleaded the night before about how Lou was also his best friend, and wanted to set up our nuptials. Heâd gotten the pastor and everything. Somehow, Samuel couldnât refuse.
Lou stopped wiping dust for a moment, and stuck his hands into his pocket before examining me for the thirtieth time. He always seemed to glare into my face like he had a problem with me. I shot him back with that same defiant stare, and gave him the evil eye too.
